Through the Lens: An Asian American Experience in 2021

This photo book features over 50 powerful documentary images captured by 10 of Los Angeles’ top photojournalists. Presented in panoramic scope, the collection documents 15 Stop Asian Hate rallies and commemorative events held across Greater Los Angeles between February 20 and June 26, 2021. In response to the rise of anti-Asian hate across the United States, people took to the streets with banners and signs to voice a clear message: “Love, not hate. Unity, not division.”

All 10 contributing photographers are award-winning, veteran news photojournalists, representing outlets such as Pulitzer-winning Chinese American photographer Ringo Chiu, PPAGLA Chair Apu Gomes, AP photographer Damian Dovarganes, Los Angeles Time Staff Photographer Genaro Molina, and former photography director at China Youth Daily Yanguang He. Amid the ongoing pandemic in 2021, they moved tirelessly through neighborhoods and city streets to capture these poignant moments. Several of the featured images were published by major media outlets including the Associated Press, Agence France-Presse, and the Los Angeles Times, drawing significant attention from both the public and the press.
